Meet Old Winyards

Shirefest 2015 Veterans

What's the story behind your band's founding?

Old Winyards was founded a long long time ago.... long before my time!  As far as I can tell, from studying vast amounts of scattered LMB Lore, OW was created as a pick-up band to play at our kin's weekly Ales and Tales traveling variety show!

How did your band get its name?

Hmm, now this is a bit of forgotten lore that I have not been able to dig up!  Instead, I will refer to a previous interview quote from our fearless leader Byrcha:

"Oops, I really don’t know! LMBers like to drink? We probably should have named ourselves after a famous pie instead."

Sounds about right!

How did your members meet one another?

As Old Winyards is one of The Lonely Mountain Band's official bands (we have three), we all met in kinchat.  Some come to play with us willingly, while others are frequently bribed with pie, promises to play their favorite songs, or just surprise invited to the band raid- whoops!  Many many kinnies have passed thorugh the band's roster - most of the current group has been playing together regularly for well over a year now (give or take a few members who have gone missing or who have recently joined).

How would you describe your band's music?

Old Winyards plays a fairly eclectic mix of music ranging from traditional to rock, from Lord of the Rings themed to modern.  We have hoarded collected a large selection of songs over the years- all transcribed by various friends and kin members!

How do you decide which songs to play?

Currently, Old Winyards band-leadering is split between Byrcha and myself (Lhinnthel).  We try to put together a set list that will appeal to everyone and offer a good dance mix.  Some weeks we have a theme to match the location and other weeks it's whatever suites our fancy.

Do you have a signature song?

A few OW classics would be any of the songs from our founder (The Song of Durin, Gilgalad, Beyond, Celduin, etc.) as well as songs from current and past kin members and friends (Whither the Lost Hoard, Free Will, Hammer to Fall, Khizli Jigs, etc.).  We also start every show at Ales & Tales with a beloved song by the same name.

What's the highlight of your band's time together?

Old Winyards is the reason why Mondays are one of the best days of the week!  Backstage chat can get all kinds of silly and some band members have been known to create interesting new techniques with their flumming and hornpiping instruments!  Mostly, we just try to have a great time with an amazing group of kinnies and hope the audience is still around when the Last Song has been played!

Do you have any stories about a time when things didn't go so well?

Well... there are many likely stories of link death, pie-less nights, out of tune instruments, near drownings and oh that one time someone fell asleep on their keyboard.. uhm, I mean... in the bushes.

Does your band play a regular concert? If so, when and where?

You can find Old Winyards at 9:30 pm /servertime|EDT, every Monday evening, at Ales & Tales, on the Landroval server.  Just /joinchannel alesandtales to find out where the gathering is each week!

Does your band have a website, Twitter feed, Youtube channel, or links to any performances?

We do have a Facebook page located at facebook.com/AlesAndTales.  On occasion someone even remembers to update it!  You can also check out our kin website at alesandtales.com.

What's the one thing we should know about your band above all else?

We love to rock!

Is there anything else you'd like to tell us about your group?

Can we have a few (dozen) pies in our green room?
