Belladonnas

Meet the Belladonnas

What's the story behind your band's founding?

Rosalie has played in a few bands in the past, most notably Breakfast Club.  Over the last four years, she has primarily been known as the hobbit behind Shirefest.  After tooling around with some songs in the shadows she finally decided to bring a few into the Winterfest light.

How did your band get its name?

First of all, I know that the proper plural form of la bella donna is le belle donne, but the Belladonnas somehow felt right.  Rather than the Italian phrase, it references Bilbo's mother, Belladonna Took, as well as the deadly nightshade.  The band is made up of some lovely hobbit lasses who are not always very kind to the goblins, so it seemed appropriate.

How did your members meet one another?

Right now there's just one of us behind the scenes, but at some point I may bring in some Second Breakfast kinmates.  Right now they're just a gang of ginger cousins.

How would you describe your band's music?

For this event, we will be playing folk songs and classical.  There are plans for the girls to reform themselves into Riveting Rosie and the Hot Club of Hobbiton for a future jazz performance.

How do you decide which songs to play?

I look for things that I enjoy that I've never heard anyone else play.  Then I try to find a midi I don't hate and see if I can adapt it to something I don't hate.  And then I play it back later to see if I hate it then (you'd be surprised how often I decide to hate it later).  My taste can be rather eclectic so I must focus my energies.

Do you have a signature song?

I can already guess what it will be, but I'm not sure that I'll repeat many songs if this show leads to future appearances.

What's the highlight of your band's time together?

Deciding to apply for this show after quite a bit of hemming and hawing.

Do you have any stories about a time when things didn't go so well?

I'm somewhat convinced that I will by the end of Winterfest.  It's even possible our set will actually be the end of Winterfest itself.

Does your band play a regular concert? If so, when and where?

I have no plans to play a regular concert, but we may randomly pop up again at some point next year in some form.

Does your band have a website, Twitter feed, YouTube channel, or links to any performances?

We're newborns.  Perhaps after Winterfest, I will have something to share.  I'm one of the people who maintain this website as well as the Crickit Music twitter feed, so the news will certainly be shared in both places if we perform again.

What's the one thing we should know about your band above all else?

We don't necessarily stick with the lore.  In fact, we rarely do.  The lyrics at this concert will be in their original non-English forms, and lyrics I have written for other songs are generally in the realm of in-game references and metacommentary.  I always struggled with keeping my head within the game rather than outside of the game.  If this is a big problem for you, it may be worth skipping my set.  Just make sure you return for Dulcet Tones!

Is there anything else you'd like to tell us about your group?

I'll try my best to give you something a bit different.  I'm not going to match the musicianship of a Daffin, but I at least hope that I won't make your ears bleed.
