The Rolling Kegs

  Meet the Rolling Kegs
Shirefest 2014 and 2015 Veterans

Watch their set from Shirefest 2018

What's the story behind your band's founding?

It all started with the Bards and Scholars guild of the Kinship of Durin's Folk back in 2011. Here members of Durin's Folk could join for a relaxing bit of musical entertainment.  After several months a fixed group started to form which became known simply as "the Band". As members left to seek other fortunes three members remained, they renamed "the band", and founded "the Beards". By the time of Archet Aid 2012 (the first big concert of the band) the three band members had decided to rename the band, and "The Rolling Kegs" was born.  I still think back at those tremendously fond memories... most of the time.

How did your band get its name?

As mentioned, we started out back in the day, with the name "The Beards", keeping in mind a band name like "The Beatles". After reading The Hobbit again (during the barrels of Mirkwood chapter), a thought popped into mind "The Rolling Kegs", not only was it a wink at "The Rolling Stones" but it had Tolkien lore at the heart of it. And you must know that is important to us, we after all are hardcore Tolkien lore geeks... most of the time.

How did your members meet one another?

The current members of The Rolling Kegs are members of two kinships (most of us have mains in one and alts in the other), being Durin's Folk and Order of the Divine Brew. People get in touch with each other at events and before you know it, we are chatting away and happily playing music... most of the time.

How would you describe your band's music?

Wow, that's a tough question. ALL SORTS with a heavy dwarven sause would likely be the most accurate description I guess. We play anything we like really and give a dwarven twist to it, it doesn't matter if that is Rock, Pop, Reggae, Folk, Klemzer, ... you name it! Plus, you always get a fine lyric with our songs... most of the time.

How do you decide which songs to play?

We have regular rehearsals, where we discuss, chat, eat... and obviously play. During those rehearsals (or on our private band forum), we reach a consensus. There is never any debate really, we all get along nicely... most of the time.

Do you have a signature song?

"Anthem of the Dwarves" is one that comes to mind. Written as a national anthem for all dwarves. Most of us are quite fond of it, some of our members are (apparently) even brought to tears by it every time. It's our handkerchief moment really... most of the time.

What's the highlight of your band's time together?

Double second place at this years Weatherstock would definitely quality as a highlight. But apart from concerts, just being together as a group and having fun is a highlight on it's own... most of the time. *starts looking for the other Rolling Kegs members to start a group-hug*

Do you have any embarrassing stories about a time when things didn't go so well?

Actually, and I'm not exaggerating, they are few and far between. With the exception of a who-grabbed-the-last-chicken-wing-fight... or a fight over the last ale, we are a peaceful folk... most of the time.

Does your band play a regular concert? If so, when and where?

Apart from our own seasonal concerts (that are announced on our site), we like to think of ourselves as a festival crew. Not that we are excluding other regular concerts in the future, Mahal knows we have the material for it, there are just so many events we are asked for (no boasting) that it's hard to play at all of them... most of the time.

Does your band have a website, Twitter feed or links to any performances?

All are welcome to visit our site: www.therollingkegs.tk

Soon we'll be posting loads more there, stay tuned for some awesome stuff to come!
We are hard at work at making it even better... most of the time.

What's the one thing we should know about your band above all else?

When you book us, have a Keg full of ale ready. What?! We get thirsty while we perform.... most of the time.

Is there anything else you'd like to mention?

Thrandili has ants in her pockets, Kandral has a secret crush on a male elf, Buhni has the strange sensation someone else is controlling her, Snorvir's name may be band in Scandinavia, Gil is the star of any show (even when he isn't), Hlifa has pibgorn nightmares, Glorieskh can't stop winking at the lads and Balyndis has a fear her instruments will explode... yeah, that sums us up really, a proper dwarrow throng... most of the time.
